Aussiblue Turf

Aussiblue Turf is one of the softest turf varieties on the market, growing well in the sub-tropical climate of South East Queensland.

What is Aussiblue Couch?

Aussiblue Couch is popular across South East Queensland for its rich, dark colour, creating beautiful lawns for both homes and businesses.

Aussiblue has a soft, lush feel with a bluey-green tinge to its leaf and is regularly compared to Queensland Blue Couch turf. Aussiblue Couch has a fine to medium leaf blade and unlike regular Queensland Blue Couch has a tighter leaf and root structure and is more shade tolerant. Think Queensland Blue Couch but on steroids. Thicker, lusher and more vibrant.

Is Aussiblue turf suitable for you?

As a soft-leaf couch, Aussiblue is one of our top selling varieties for active family backyards and exhibition front lawns.

It grows extremely well in the subtropical climate we have here in South-East Queensland. It is often compared to Qld Blue Couch, but outcompetes on softness, stunning looks and shade tolerance.

Aussiblue turf thrives in almost all soil conditions and can even tolerate small amounts of shade. As a real bonus, Aussiblue offers better ground surface coverage than other couch varieties because it maintains a closer and tighter structure to its leaves. This means it holds out weeds very well!

Soft, drought-tolerant and easy to maintain

Aussiblue couch retains its colour throughout winter, much better than other turf varieties, but its super-soft leaf means it doesn’t cope with frost.

A popular choice in Queensland for its drought resistance and ability to withstand dry spells, Aussiblue Turf goes dormant in high temperatures to avoid moisture loss. A shower of rain or watering will see it shoot new life quickly.

Aussiblue is generally a hardy lawn that is easy to maintain. It has moderate to high wear tolerance, but if it does get damaged is able to repair itself due to its fast growth. Give it some water and fertiliser for encouragement!

Water, water, water! You will need to water your new lawn every morning and afternoon for the first two weeks. For the next two weeks you will need to water every morning, then every other day as needed.

Mow your turf

When it has “taken” and started to grow. Use a high setting on your mower and make sure the blades are sharp.

How do I take care of my Aussiblue turf?

Temperature & Climate

Aussiblue turf flourishes in warmer climates and extreme heat, making it the perfect turf for the South East Queensland region. Aussiblue will be dormant in winter, so it is essential to keep it short in the lead-up to this season.

Sunlight & Shade Tolerance

Aussiblue needs 5-6 hours of sunlight per day. So, like other warm-season grasses, it’s vital to ensure it can regularly bathe in the full sun for optimal health and growth. Aussiblue will tolerate SOME shade.

Watering & Drought Tolerance

Aussiblue is very drought resistant and requires far less watering than other grass types, such as buffalo varieties. Nonetheless, established Aussiblue will benefit from weekly deep watering to encourage drought tolerance.

Soil Suitability

Aussiblue couch is well-suited to sandy soil areas and can even adjust to clay. It is recommended to use some Gypsum on any clay soil before laying Aussiblue. A soil pH between 6-6.5 is ideal for general health. Nutrients may be added to the soil to provide this optimal growth environment.

Mowing

Mow your Aussiblue regularly (every 7-10 days) during growth season – October to March – ideally at 25-30mm. During the winter months, you can stretch your mowing routine to roughly every two weeks which gives you a well-earned break from yard work for a few months. Aussiblue is a very lush turf so mower clippings can be clumpy. Make sure to remove the clippings.

Pets, diseases and weeds

Aussiblue generally outcompetes weeds when established, helping control new and existing weeds in residential yards. Its resistance to disease and weed invasion is one of this variety’s biggest advantages, making it a perfect turf for domestic and commercial lawns. Aussiblue is susceptible to lawn pests during growth season September to March. A dose of Acelepryn in late September and early January will treat and protect your Aussiblue lawn.

Fertilising

Aussiblue needs less fertiliser than other varieties to maintain its colour. Fertilise with a complete slow-release fertiliser in March and September and always follow the application rates.
